What are the student leadership responsibilities?

The band relies on student leadership to help the directors increase the quality of instruction and to promote leadership skills. Students are assigned to various leadership positions by the band director according to their ability to lead and ability to properly perform various functions in the band.

Students are not given the ability to punish or reprimand other students. Students can be assigned to oversee various consequences set forth by the band director. Any student can be removed from a leadership assignment at any time for any reason by the band director.

Below is a list of leadership assignments and their responsibilities.

Drum Major – Student leader of the band obtained by a try-out which is judged by the directors.

Jobs include:

  1. Provide a good example for students to follow.
  2. Maintain order while the directors are not available.
  3. Conduct the band on the field and when the directors are not available.
  4. Assist Section Leaders with their duties.
  5. Various administrative duties such as rehearsal attendance records, logs, etc...

Section Leader – Student leader of his/her section appointed by the director.

Jobs include:

  1. Provide a good example for students to follow.
  2. Responsible for checking other students of his/her section for proper music, uniform and equipment.
  3. Instruct and answer questions pertaining to the music and marching.
  4. Follow through with any instructions the director may provide for the band.
  5. Conduct sectionals when directors or instructors are not available.  (All sectionals must be pre-approved by the directors.)

Band Leaders – Students who serve as mentors. These students are appointed by the band directors. Directors have the ability to deny any student appointment. 

Jobs may include:

  1. Provide a good example for students to follow.
  2. Keep communication between students, band parents and the directors.
  3. Assist Section Leaders with uniform inspections.
  4. Fulfill section leader duties in their absence.
  5. Drill setters.

Librarian – Student in charge of music and instrument records appointed by the director.

Jobs include:

  1. Provide a good example for students to follow.
  2. Maintain and organize all music in the library.
  3. Handout, take up and make copies of all music distributed to students.
  4. Maintain school owned instrument inventory books.
  5. Keep music updated in Charms.
